Art in Residence, Art in Resonance: The Peninsula Hong Kong Curates a New Kind of Presence

In the cultural heart of Hong Kong, there is a hotel that not only offers accommodation – but also brings the transforming face of contemporary art to the world. The Peninsula Hong Kong is once again bringing its “Art in Resonance” program, launched in 2019, to the stage with the 2025 edition. This year’s exhibition runs in parallel with Art Basel Hong Kong and transforms the hotel’s architectural memory into a timeless gallery with works by three powerful artists.

Developed in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), the program offers a glimpse into both the past and the future. Featuring works by Hong Kong artists Phoebe Hui and Chris Cheung (h0nh1m) and Shanghai’s Lin Fanglu, this selection brings contemporary art to hotel guests in a serendipitous way – with a sense of wonder and a quiet but profound impact.

Phoebe Hui’s monumental 56-square-meter installation documents the evolution of the moon on the hotel’s facade. Laser-engraved aluminum plates carry images of the moon, from 17th-century astronomical drawings to today’s open-source data. “Lunar Rainbow” is not just a visual work; it is a meditation that combines the resilience of the moon with the hope of survival. Playing with light, this work integrates when viewed from a certain angle, offering the visitor a surprising visual experience.

Located in the elegant lobby of The Peninsula, “She’s Bestowed Love” is a monumental red wall by textile artist Lin Fanglu. Conceived as an allegory of feminine strength and protection, the work takes shape like the circumferential rings of childbirth. Inspired by the traditional techniques of the Bai people of Yunnan, Fanglu borrows the spirit of Gaia from mythology to interpret the multi-layered journey of today’s woman. After its presentation at The Peninsula, this work will be the star piece of the “Chinese Contemporary Studio Crafts” exhibition at the V&A South Kensington, opening in the fall of 2025.

Located in one of the hotel’s iconic spaces, The Verandah, “The Flow Pavilion” is like a reinterpretation of the Zen garden in the digital age. As a kinetic sphere glides across a specially woven silk carpet, viewers are both invited on a meditative journey and introduced to the internalizing side of technology. Guided by Cheung’s own brainwave data, this experience rewrites ancient mindfulness practices with today’s codes.

The Peninsula does not only host an exhibition; it offers unique experiences that bring its guests together with different forms of art. Special desserts inspired by the works in The Lobby, artistic cocktails, tea ceremonies with matcha mochi, or accommodation packages paired with art… All these are examples of how the hotel can weave contemporary art into luxury. Every detail aims to create both an aesthetic and intellectual encounter.
