From Selfie to Self-Expression

Saatchi Gallery and Huawei opened their new exhibition “From Selfie to Self-Expression”, the worlds first exhibition exploring the history of the selfie and celebrating the creative potential of the form of expression often derided.
Before the exhibition opened, Saatchi and Huawei started an international competition #SaatchiSelfie on selfie photography, furthering the dialogues on selfies as an art form. Among the 14,000 some submissions, the winner was recently announced as Dawn Woolley with “The Substitute (Holiday)”
While the exhibition also includes the selfies of the shortlisted contenders, all 14,000 selfies submitted are also shown at a digital screen. Through the competition and the exhibition, Saatchi and Huawei aim to encourage smartphones as a tool for creativity.
