A lot of people lean towards different ways to express themselves. What pushed you towards art specifically painting and sculpture as a tool for self-expression?
Royal Jarmon: It’s my way of getting my inside out; as well, often my therapy, how I examine the human condition.
You’re self-taught. How would you describe your individual journey as a self-made artist?
Royal Jarmon: I highly value education and with the wealth of resources that the internet, books, and people offer today; I found that to be my best route for learning.
You have managed to create a recognizable and unique style. When and how did you discover/define your personal style as an artist? How would you define it?
Royal Jarmon: It has formed naturally over many years. I find it important to continue searching and growing in life as it changes your perspective through experience.
What do you think originality means in terms of art? How do you stay true to yourself in your works in this world of constant exposure?
Royal Jarmon: There is an intuitive nature to my process but as it goes along, I like to search out the origins of my inspiration, those natural combinations are what make it uniquely mine.
You use a lot of pop culture references as well as everyday objects in your works. Can you share the meaning behind the recurring characters or motifs (catss, flowers, tools, cartoon and video game characters) you use in your pieces?
Royal Jarmon: I simply find these visually attractive and as I’m drawn in, and work with these subjects, there is a relational value that reveals itself.
How would you describe inspiration? What is your creative process like?
Royal Jarmon: Coming in tune with what interests you and finding how to express it. I mix consistent habits with spontaneity. An example would be sketching in the morning but being open to variations that will contribute, such as finding a new environment to do so in.
You said earlier that you work 24/7 in your head. Would it be fair to say that you as a person are fused with your work? What kind of advantages and disadvantages do you think these carries?
Royal Jarmon: It’s true. And that can be helpful for the work to be very genuine and direct; but it can also be difficult to turn off when attention is needed in other directions.
What can you not live without?
Royal Jarmon: I always need to be making things, it’s my way to have a release.
Out of all the things that make us human what qualities do you think makes one unique?
Royal Jarmon: That’s difficult to answer, there seems to be patterns to everyone as people; but I’d say it is very interesting to see how individuals choose to play out their life from one’s own point of view (starting point).
