“Oppenheimer” wins seven statuettes, including Best Movie. Emma Stone was the evening’s other big winner, taking home her second Best Actress Oscar for Poor Things. Let’s get to the essentials:
In Hollywood on Sunday, Christopher Nolan won Best Director and his feature film “Oppenheimer” went home with the Oscar for Best Movie.
Cillian Murphy won the Oscar for Best Actor, while Emma Stone took Best Actress.
Unsurprisingly, Hollywood crowned Oppenheimer on Sunday.
The film won six other statuettes. Buoyed by rave reviews and an impeccable cast, Christopher Nolan’s portrait of the father of the atomic bomb dominated the evening. “I can’t say enough about the incredible team we put together for this film,” said the director, taking advantage of his Best Director award to thank all the actors.
A statuette for Robert Downey Jr. Cillian Murphy, masterful as Robert Oppenheimer, a nuclear genius riddled with contradictions and doubts, won the Oscar for Best Actor. “For better or for worse, we live in the world of Oppenheimer” and the atomic bomb, observed the Irishman. “So I’d really like to dedicate this award to peacemakers around the world.” His on-screen antagonist, Robert Downey Jr, who plays a conservative bureaucrat orchestrating the scientist’s public humiliation, took home the award for Best Supporting Actor.
The film’s coronation was rounded off by other technical statuettes – editing, cinematography, soundtrack – befitting the reputation of a popular masterpiece it has forged for itself since its theatrical release this summer.
And two for Emma Stone Emma Stone was the evening’s other big winner. After La La Land in 2017, she picked up her second Best Actress Oscar for Poor Things. This baroque tale by Yorgos Lanthimos won a total of four statuettes for its retro-futuristic aesthetic.
Undermined by the war between Israel and Hamas. Several stars, including Billie Eilish, Ramy Youssef and French actor Swann Arlaud, sported pins calling for a ceasefire, while several small demonstrations by activists took place in the streets of Los Angeles.
