Priscilla

The story of a toxic marriage from a German military base to a dream home in Graceland. Adapted by Sofia Coppola from the book “Elvis and Me”, Priscilla shows us aspects of Elvis Presley that we have never known before, while also telling the story of his turbulent relationship with Priscilla.

In the movie, we watch the love and marriage between Elvis Presley and Priscilla through Priscilla’s eyes, and a marriage story that focuses on Priscilla is presented to the audience. In 1959, Priscilla, only 14 years old, meets Elvis Presley in high school at the US Air Force base in Germany where her father is stationed, and soon develops feelings for Elvis that are reciprocated. When Priscilla is invited to Elvis’ home for the first time, she puts an end to her life full of restlessness and boredom and responds positively to this opportunity to get excited. Her father, an officer, is at first extremely reluctant to let her hang out with Elvis and his friends, but is reassured when Elvis assures her that she will be safely escorted. In the early stages of their relationship, Elvis practically falls all over Priscilla. The two, who we often see having long and deep conversations in the movie, grow closer to each other day by day and Elvis sees Priscilla as someone he can trust despite her youth. From the beginning of their relationship, Elvis tries to control Priscilla, telling her what to wear and insisting that she dye her hair black. Returning to the US with her family, Priscilla assumes that Elvis has forgotten her, until she is called to Memphis to join him at his home. At times, living alone and neglected in Elvis’ mansion, Priscilla seems more like a lonely, sad and forlorn heroine than someone in a movie about a rock ‘n’ roll star. When Elvis becomes interested in crazy religious ideas, he asks Priscilla to follow him on his spiritual journey and the two begin taking psychedelic drugs together. When Priscilla turned 21, the two married and had a daughter, Lisa Marie. However, having a daughter does not make Elvis more careful with Priscilla. Following Lost in Translation and Marie Antoinette, Sofia Coppola successfully tackles the painful loneliness and isolation experienced by women who have everything and nothing at the same time in Priscilla.

Caliee Spaeny won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her performance as Priscilla, while Euphoria’s rising star Jacob Elordi plays Elvis. Sofia Coppola continues her aesthetically striking, emotionally intense and character-driven cinematography in Prisccilla, adding to her films that focus on women’s inner lives and relationships, and in her own coolly analytical style, she makes some striking points about how Priscilla is controlled by the men in her life.
